How to Publish a Comic Book on Amazon KDP

Updated By the ColorCraft team8 min read

Short answer

To publish a comic book on Amazon KDP as a paperback, export the interior as a print-ready PDF at one of KDP’s trim sizes (6 × 9 and 7 × 10 in suit most comics), with bleed if the art runs to the page edge, at least 24 pages, and every balloon inside the margins. Choose premium or standard color ink for a color comic, upload a one-piece cover wrap sized for your page count, and tell KDP which text and images are AI-generated. KDP reviews a new paperback in up to 72 hours.

Key takeaways

  • KDP has no traditional US comic-issue size. 6 × 9 in suits manga-style digests; 7 × 10 in is close to a US comic issue.
  • Bleed pages are the trim plus 0.125" wide and plus 0.25" tall, and KDP needs “Bleed (PDF only)” set to match.
  • A paperback needs at least 24 pages, or 72 on standard color ink.
  • Color ink costs more to print, and KDP prices a color book’s whole page count at the color rate.
  • Keep lettering inside the margins and at least 7 pt, the smallest font KDP accepts.
  • KDP prints spine text only from 79 pages, so most comics have a plain spine; the cover is still one PDF of back, spine and front.
  • Disclose AI-generated images and text when you publish; AI-assisted edits to your own work need no disclosure.

What trim size should a comic book be on KDP?

Pick from KDP’s own list, because a size it doesn’t offer can’t be printed there. The traditional US comic issue (about 6.625 × 10.25 in) isn’t on that list; KDP’s nearest sizes are 6.69 × 9.61 and 7 × 10 in. KDP calls 6 × 9 in its most common US paperback trim, and it is close to the digest size manga readers know. The full list is on KDP’s Set Trim Size, Bleed, and Margins page.

KDP trims that suit comics, with the page size to export when the art bleeds

8.5 × 11 in8.625 × 11.25 inLargeKids’ comics and big art-book pages

Size class matters for cost: KDP counts a trim wider than 6.12" or taller than 9" as large, and large trims cost more per book to print. Choose the trim before you lay out a single page. Panels drawn for a tall 7 × 10 page don’t fit a 6 × 9 page without being redrawn or cropped, and the cover is built for one trim only.

Does a comic need bleed, and what margins does KDP require?

Comics often run a panel or a splash right off the page edge. If anything on a page touches the edge, export with bleed: each page is the trim width plus 0.125" and the trim height plus 0.25", and you choose Bleed (PDF only) on KDP. KDP notes that bleed works only with fixed-format files such as print-ready PDFs, which is what a comic interior is anyway.

  • Outside margins: at least 0.25" without bleed and 0.375" with bleed, measured on the page you export.
  • Inside (gutter) margin: at least 0.375" for books of 24 to 150 pages, which covers almost every comic.
  • Panel borders: a border that stops a hair short of the trim reads as a mistake once the page is cut. Either keep it inside the margin or run the panel into the bleed.

The KDP margin & bleed calculator gives the page size and live area for your own trim and page count, and KDP trim size, bleed and margins walks through the rules in more depth.

Where should lettering sit on a printed comic page?

Balloons, captions and sound effects are the words a reader must not lose, so they belong inside the margins, never in the bleed or across the binding gutter. KDP’s paperback submission guidelines set the interior minimum at 7 pt type and ask for images of at least 300 DPI. Comic lettering is small by tradition, so check the smallest balloon on a printed proof, not only on screen.

In ColorCraft (our product), comic lettering is real text over the art rather than words baked into the picture, placed inside the print safe area. When words are too long for a panel they are set smaller, but never below 7 pt. The rest of the lettering craft is in comic page layouts explained.

Which ink and paper should a comic use, and what does it cost?

KDP’s print options are black ink on white or cream paper, standard color and premium color, both on white paper. KDP says to choose a color option if any images are meant to print in color. Standard color needs at least 72 pages; black ink and premium color start at 24. A black-and-white comic (in ColorCraft, the “Manga, black & white”, “Neo-noir”, and “1930s newspaper noir” styles) can use black ink and the cheapest printing.

KDP’s printing cost formula is a fixed cost plus the page count times a per-page cost, so a color comic pays the color rate on every page, including the credits and any blank ones. These are Amazon.com costs per copy:

Amazon.com printing cost per copy for a comic paperback (USD)

48$2.30Not offered$4.12$4.84
72$2.30$2.84$5.68$6.76

Printing cost comes off your royalty on every sale, so price the book with it in view: the KDP printing cost calculator covers other trims and marketplaces, and how KDP royalties are calculated shows the rest of the formula.

How do you make the cover wrap and spine for a comic?

KDP wants the cover as one PDF with the back cover, spine and front cover side by side, plus 0.125" of bleed on the outside edges. The spine width is the page count times the paper’s thickness per page (0.002347" for premium color), so a 32-page 6 × 9 comic on premium color has a 0.0751" spine and a 12.3251 × 9.25" cover. Finish the interior first; every page you add widens the spine.

  • Spine text: KDP allows it only from 79 pages, with 0.0625" clear on each side, so most comics have a plain spine.
  • Cover text: keep titles and credits at least 0.125" inside the trim lines.
  • File size: KDP won’t convert a cover over 650 MB and asks for 40 MB or less.

KDP’s cover calculator draws a template for your trim, paper and page count. How to make a KDP paperback cover and spine covers the barcode area and the whole build.

Do you have to disclose an AI-generated comic on KDP?

Yes, if any of it is AI-generated. KDP’s content guidelines define AI-generated content as text, images or translations created by an AI tool, and ask you to say so when you publish a new book or republish an edited one. Content you made yourself and only edited or checked with AI is AI-assisted, and KDP doesn’t ask about it.

A comic has two parts to answer for. If AI drew the panels, the images are AI-generated. If AI also wrote the story and dialogue, the text is too; if you wrote every word yourself and only the art is AI, say so. Either way you remain responsible for the book meeting KDP’s guidelines. The upload screens are covered in can you sell AI books on KDP and the KDP upload guide.

How long does KDP take to review a comic book?

KDP’s timelines page gives up to 72 hours for a paperback review, 3 business days for the book to be live on Amazon, and up to 72 hours for the detail page on Amazon.com (up to 5 days elsewhere). An account publishing its first book can take up to 6 days. Leave room for that in any launch date you announce.

How does a ColorCraft comic fit KDP’s rules?

ColorCraft’s AI comic book generator creates comics at 6 × 9, 7 × 10, and 8.5 × 11 inches, from 8 to 48 pages; choose 24 or more for a KDP paperback. Each drawn page uses 2 pages of your balance. Panels sit inside KDP’s margins, with the binding gutter sized for your page count, or run into the bleed on purpose. The interior exports in KDP’s bleed format, so choose Bleed (PDF only), and the cover wrap is sized to your trim and page count. Check the proof yourself: KDP decides what it accepts.

Steps: publishing a comic paperback on KDP

  1. Pick the trim before you draw

Choose a KDP trim size such as 6 x 9 or 7 x 10 in and lay out every page for it, because panels, margins and the cover all depend on it.

  2. Reach the page minimum

Plan at least 24 pages, or 72 if you will print on standard color ink, and count every page in the PDF.

  3. Set up bleed and margins

Size each page to the trim plus 0.125 in wide and 0.25 in tall if art reaches the edge, and keep balloons and captions inside the margins.

  4. Choose the ink and paper

Pick black ink for a black-and-white comic, or premium or standard color for a color one, then check the printing cost at your page count.

  5. Make the cover wrap

Build one PDF with the back cover, spine and front cover, sized with KDP’s cover calculator for your trim, paper and final page count.

  6. Upload, disclose and review

Upload both files, answer the AI-generated content questions, check every page in the previewer, and allow up to 72 hours for review.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best trim size for a comic book on KDP?

KDP doesn’t offer the traditional US comic size. 6 x 9 in, KDP’s most common US trim, suits manga-style digests, and 7 x 10 in is close to the size of a US comic issue. 8.5 x 11 in suits large-format kids’ comics.

How many pages does a comic need for a KDP paperback?

At least 24 pages on black ink or premium color, and at least 72 on standard color. Count every page in the PDF, blank ones included.

Is premium or standard color better for a comic?

Both print on white paper. Standard color costs less per page but needs at least 72 pages; premium color starts at 24, so it is the only color option for a shorter comic. Order a proof to see the difference on your own art.

Do I have to tell KDP my comic was made with AI?

Yes, if AI created any of the text or images. KDP asks you to disclose AI-generated content when you publish a new book or republish an edited one. If you made the content yourself and only used AI to edit or check it, that is AI-assisted and needs no disclosure.

Can a 24-page comic have text on the spine?

No. KDP allows spine text only on books of at least 79 pages, so a short comic has a plain spine. The front and back covers carry the title.

How long does KDP take to approve a comic?

KDP lists up to 72 hours for a paperback review, and 3 business days for the book to be live on Amazon. A first book on a new account can take up to 6 days.
